To celebrate Women in Horror Month, I will be highlighting some of my favorite undersung female characters in horror films each day this month. For this very special post in particular, I’m going to avoid spoilers because the less you know about this movie, the better your experience is going to be. And going in cold will ensure it is a great experience.
Today I’m celebrating Nao from 2017’s One Cut of the Dead – a brilliant Japanese zombie film that will leave you feeling – against all logic and reason – that there really is room for another zombie film in the world.
Now, this is cheating a bit because Nao is going to endear herself to anyone who watches this film. But the reason I wanted to highlight her is simple: in a brilliant, nearly perfect movie with an ace ensemble of characters thrown together, she stands out. You will be confused by her at first, but you will be quoting her by the end of the film.
I also love seeing older-than-a-20something women being awesome in horror films. This will not be the last of them you will see this month.
Hats off to you Nao for being one of the best parts of a fantastic movie. POM!
